HPE Alletra 9000 and Primera Active Peer Persistence
Active Peer Persistence provides automatic transparent failover for HPE Alletra 9000 and HPE Primera storage where the LUNs in both the source and target sit.
What is Active Peer Persistence for HPE Alletra 9000 and Primera?
Active Peer Persistence is a capability for HPE Alletra 9000 and HPE Primera storage that helps you keep applications running even if one site goes down. It provides automatic, transparent failover between two storage systems.
In practice, this means:
- Your LUNs are active at both the source and target sites, so hosts can access storage from either location.
- If one site fails, workloads continue to run using the other site’s storage without requiring manual intervention.
- IT teams can rethink how they design for availability, moving from traditional, manual failover processes to a more automated, always-on approach.
How does automatic transparent failover work?
With Active Peer Persistence, both storage arrays (source and target) present the same LUNs as active to the hosts. The hosts see a single logical resource, even though it is backed by two systems in different sites.
When a site issue occurs:
- The solution detects the problem and automatically fails over I/O to the surviving site.
- This failover is designed to be transparent to the hosts, so applications continue to run without needing manual storage remapping.
- Because both sides are active, you can distribute workloads across sites during normal operation and still maintain access if one site becomes unavailable.
What does the demo in the video show?
The video walks through two main aspects of Active Peer Persistence for HPE Alletra 9000 and HPE Primera:
- Configuration and setup – It shows how to set up Active Peer Persistence between two sites so that LUNs are active on both sides and ready to host workloads.
- Simulated site failure – It then demonstrates a simulated site outage and how workloads continue to run by automatically using the surviving site’s storage, without manual failover steps.
This helps IT teams visualize how they can reimagine their availability strategy by using active-active storage across sites instead of relying solely on traditional, manual disaster recovery procedures.
